INTERVIEW BY TAEHOON KIM OF HOONITURE.COM
NAME: Taylor Scruggs
OCCUPATION: Designer & Founder of Equipoise Studio
LOCATION: Los Angeles, California
MORNING ROUTINE?: I set an intention for the day
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF “BEAUTY”? It's a connection to what is true that is deep inside of you. It can be a spiritual experience, even if for a brief second.
FAVORITE WORD? Equipoise, meaning balance of forces or interest.
3 HOME ITEMS THAT YOU LOVE? • Rare plants • Found objects • Library furniture (i.e. Georgian articulating reading tables, folio stands, ladders). Furniture shouldn't be precious, it should get better with time, use, and age.
3 FASHION ITEMS THAT YOU LOVE? • Japanese indigo scarves • Well-worn and well-cared for captoe boots • Crested repp ties
FAVORITE SPOT IN YOUR HOME AND WHY? I live in a 1930's Streamline Moderne townhouse. In the corners of my bedroom the metal casement windows come together at a right angle. I love laying in bed, looking out the windows at the eucalyptus trees swaying in the wind
FAVORITE PLANT AT HOME? My installation of stag fern mounts
ALL TIME FAVORITE MEAL AND WHERE? La Super Rica, Santa Barbara. Their vegetable tamale is so simple with clear developed flavors. I love simple things done exceptionally well-- that's real luxury for me
VICE SNACK? BBQ Chips
CHOICE OF DRINK (HEARD YOU MAKE GOOD COCKTAILS)? A Martinez, the well rounded precursor to the Martini
FAVORITE BAR? Tosca Cafe, San Francisco. I love the long patinated wooden bar, with the bar folk in their old school white dinner jackets. I love how they serve their martinis in a low ball tumbler with a huge hand chiseled hunk of ice keeping it really cold
WHAT IS YOUR CLASSIC UNIFORM? James Perse T-Shirt, tailored wool trouser with a good English boot
FAVORITE COLOR? I have an intimate love affair with the color green
FAVORITE FRAGRANCE? Comme Des Garcons Incense de Avignon
FAVORITE ART AT HOME? A photograph portrait of my great grandfather gifted to me by my great grandmother. It's a striking composition and beautiful heirloom.
SCENTED CANDLE OF CHOICE? I gravitate towards smoky scents but there's something about Cire Trudon Abd El Kader (Moroccan Mint Tea) that's comforting
FAVORITE COFFEE TABLE BOOK AT HOME? Before They Pass Away, Jimmy Nelson
FAVORITE KITCHEN UTENSIL? An ice pick that I found at an estate sale. I never thought I'd really use it but it is strangely useful for many things others than chipping ice
3 CURRENT FAVORITE TUNES IN YOUR PLAYLIST? • Anyone Who Knows What Love Is – Irma Thomas • The Fall – Rhye • Heartbeats – Jose Gonzales
FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP? In nature. Some of my favorite treasures have been foraged pieces that complete a room
NEW OR VINTAGE? Vintage, preferably antique
ONE IMPORTANT INTERIOR ADVICE? Be true to yourself and what you like. My interiors are heavily shaped by memory and intended to invoke them. Surround yourself with things that make you feel good
PLEASE FILL IN THE (BLANK):
I THINK ABOUT (the feeling of color) A LOT
I AM GOOD AT BEING (a kind and generous person)
I AM CURIOUS ABOUT (the objectivity of 'good' design when it comes to measurably improving our quality of life)
I‘M GRATEFUL FOR (my friends, family, and health)
